What is massage?
Massage is the stroking, kneading, warming, rolling and pressing of skin and muscles.
There are lots of different kinds of massage, each with broadly different origins and aims - some focus on soothing muscle pain; others on increasing energy levels; some aim to improve a specific physical condition; others simply to help you relax.
Many of us are working / playing hard and need to maintain better flexibility and help with muscle tension, so including a regular massage therapy session into your self care has been very beneficial to many of my clientele.
Massage makes you feel good in lots of ways, and can have a positive effect on your whole body - your bones, your muscles, your heart, your skin, your breathing, digestion, and your mental health.
Massage works in various ways:
- It relaxes and refreshes tired or knotted muscles. A great way to relieve the stress & tension from your body. Help your body to heal and relax with the ancient art of bodywork.
- It increases blood circulation keeping your skin healthy.
- It stimulates deep circulation, both of blood and lymph which helps your body to heal, and generally work more efficiently
- It encourages your body to produce endorphins - the natural chemicals in your body that make you feel happy. Using luxurious lotions / oils with essential oil blends you will feel renewed and nurtured into better body health.
These treatments help to reduce stress and anxiety by lowering the 'stress' hormones and increasing your 'happy' hormones.
It's instinctive to give someone a hug or a pat on the back to comfort or reassure them; in some ways, massage is a formal version of that instinct.
What is massage good for?
In its various forms, massage can help to cure and relieve a wide range of complaints. Research shows that it is particularly good at relieving stress-related problems, from anxiety and panic attacks, through to asthma, constipation and high blood pressure. It is effective at treating back pain and even arthritis. It is also being used more and more with stroke and cancer patients and with people with dementia.
Massage encourages blood flow, which increases the amount of oxygen and nutrients that reach your organs and tissues. Whilst massage encourages your body to circulate the "good stuff"; it also encourages it to get rid of the "bad stuff" - waste products, toxins, carbon dioxide, and excess water.
It can be used to treat specific physical injuries or difficulties, and to help with rehabilitation after someone has had an injury. It can also help prevent further muscle or tissue damage.
One of its greatest effects of most massages is that it can make you feel much better about yourself, more relaxed in your own skin, calm and peaceful.
Sharon can help your body heal after accidents, operations, pregnancy and just being overworked!

What do I do in a full Body Massage?
If you are having a back massage, you will wear your underwear. Some treatments, such as Reiki are done through your clothes. If in doubt as to what's expected, ask when you book your treatment.
For a full-body massage, you will leave your underpants on. You'll find that most therapists are very skilled at protecting your modesty and making you feel comfortable; you'll never have to uncover anything you'd rather not.
Your therapist will explain how much you need to take off and then leave the room while you get ready.
She will knock a few minutes later before coming back in to do the treatment. She then only uncovers the bits she is working on.
A full-body massage doesn't have to include your sensitive areas. You can say which parts of your body you don't want to be touched.
A full-body massage usually includes your arms, legs, hands and feet, your neck and back, your stomach and top of buttocks.
Even with a full-body massage, most of you stays covered most of the time. Your therapist will unwrap your arm and shoulder, for instance, or uncover your leg while she massages that part of your body.
When she needs you to turn over, she will hold the towel up as a screen so you can turn over in private.
What is the best massage type for you?
Relaxation massage is a gentle type of full-body massage that’s ideal for people who:
- are new to massage
- have a lot of tension
- are sensitive to touch
It can help release muscle knots, and it’s also a good choice for when you want to fully relax during a massage. Uses long flowing strokes and deep circular hand motions to unwind and relax your muscles.
Hot Stone Massage
Hot stone massage is best for people who have muscle pain and tension or who simply want to relax. This type of therapeutic massage is similar to a Swedish massage, only the massage therapist uses heated stones in lieu of or in addition to their hands. It eases muscle tension, improves blood flow, and relieves pain by using heated stones.
Aromatherapy massages are best for people who want to have an emotional healing component to their massage.
The style does combine soft, gentle pressure with the use of essential oils.
Your massage therapist will usually decide which essential oils to use, but you can let them know if you have a preference. Essential oils are diluted before being applied to the skin.
Deep Tissue / Remedial Massage
Deep tissue massage uses more pressure than a relaxation massage. It’s a good option if you have chronic muscle problems, such as soreness, injury, or imbalance. It can help relieve tight muscles, chronic muscle pain, and anxiety.
During a deep tissue massage, your massage therapist will use slow strokes and deep finger pressure to relieve tension from the deepest layers of your muscles and connective tissues.
Health fund rebates may apply for this style of massage.
Sports massage is a good option if you have a repetitive use injury to a muscle, such as what you may get from playing a sport.
It’s also a good option if you’re prone to injuries because it can be used to help prevent sports injuries.
You may also use sports massage to increase flexibility and performance. Additionally, sports massage can be used to relieve pain, anxiety, and muscle tension.
A sports massage can be done as a full-body massage or the massage therapist may focus on the parts of the body that need the most attention. Deep pressure may be alternated with soothing strokes depending on your needs.
Trigger Point Massage
Trigger point massages are best suited for people who have injuries, chronic pain, or a specific issue or condition.
Sometimes areas of tightness in the muscle tissues, known as trigger points, can cause pain in other parts of the body.
By focusing on relieving trigger points, this type of massage can reduce pain.
Trigger point massage uses broad, flowing strokes that are gentle and relaxing combined with stronger, deeper pressure.
The massage will include work on your entire body, though your therapist will focus on specific areas of your body that need to be released.
Reflexology is best for people who are looking to relax or restore their natural energy levels.
It’s also a good option if you aren’t comfortable being touched on your entire body.
Reflexology uses gentle to firm pressure on different pressure points of the feet, hands, and ears.
You can wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to your legs.
Prenatal / Pregnancy massage
Prenatal massage can be a safe way for women to get a massage during pregnancy.
It can help reduce pregnancy body aches, reduce stress, and ease muscle tension.
You can get a massage at any time during your pregnancy.
However, if you haven't had a massage for a while, I do not offer massages to women in their first trimester due to the risk of miscarriage during this time.
Prenatal massage uses mild pressure similar to Swedish massage.
The therapist will focus on areas such as your lower back, hips, and legs.
During the massage, you’ll lie on your side.
If you’ve had pain in your calves or other parts of your leg, see a doctor before you have a massage.
A chair massage is best for people who want a quick massage that focuses on your neck, shoulders, and back. A chair massage can also be a way to introduce you to massage if you’ve never had one before. Chair massage also helps to relieve stress and promote relaxation. This type of massage uses light to medium pressure.
